Start with your relevant engineering work.
Use a specific headline such as “Software Engineer · Python and Backend APIs” when it accurately describes your work. In the summary, connect your main technologies to the kind of software you build. Avoid claiming expertise in every tool in the vacancy.
Software engineer building Python services and web applications. Worked on Django REST APIs, PostgreSQL query performance and automated regression tests. Collaborates with product and operations teams to deliver maintainable internal tools.
For experienced candidates, put relevant work experience near the top. For a first role, projects or internships may be stronger evidence; see the fresher resume guide.
Software engineer experience example
The following employer, project and measurements are fictional. They demonstrate structure, not achievements to copy into your own resume.
Software Engineer · Example Software Studio
2023–Present · Pune · Full Time
- Built Django REST endpoints for a request-tracking application used by three operations teams; documented request validation and permissions.
- Reduced the median reporting-endpoint response time from 900 ms to 420 ms in a repeatable staging benchmark by removing redundant database queries.
- Added regression tests for access control, filtering and error responses, and documented rollback steps for weekly releases.
- Worked with the frontend engineer to define API error messages and handle empty, loading and failure states in an Angular dashboard.
Environment: Python, Django, PostgreSQL, Angular, Git
Explain what changed because of your work.
Responsible for Python development and API optimisation.
Removed repeated database lookups from the reporting API and compared response times using the same dataset before and after the change.
The specific version explains an action and how it was checked. If you have a reliable measurement, include it with enough context to avoid exaggeration. Distinguish a staging benchmark from production performance and your own contribution from the team’s result.
If you cannot disclose figures, describe scope: the workflow you supported, the failure mode you fixed, the tests you added or the operational process you improved. Do not invent metrics to make every bullet numerical.
Make your skills list easy to substantiate.
Group related tools using clear labels, for example Languages, Backend, Data and Delivery. Give priority to skills used in recent relevant work. Mention older technologies when they help explain your experience or match the role, rather than crowding out your current focus.
For projects, include the problem, your contribution, the stack and a working link where sharing is permitted. A small maintained repository with a useful README can explain your work better than several unexplained links. Never publish employer source code or private data to support a resume claim.
Example project entry
Built a searchable ticket queue with Python and PostgreSQL. Documented the REST API, added permission tests and described local setup steps. Used synthetic records for the demo.
Review the document as an application.
- Make dates and role titles consistent with your actual work history.
- Prioritise evidence that is relevant to the vacancy.
- Check links and explain unfamiliar project names.
- Avoid proficiency bars that do not define what a rating means.
- Keep a readable layout and inspect page breaks after exporting.
- Follow the employer’s upload instructions and check any auto-filled fields.
